ROCK AND ROLL WEEKLY WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Guidelines for Weekly Writing Assignment:
1) Must be either submitted on paper, or typed written and submitted through Canvas. Assignment must be quality work, or will not be accepted. 2) You are required to complete 3 of these assignment by the end of each grading period. Mr. Swallie will communicate with you about how many you have submitted, and/or how many you have remaining to complete. 3) Each writing assignment must include the following: a. Complete Sentences b. Introduction and Conclusion Sentences c. Proper Paragraph form: indent paragraphs, capitalizing proper nouns, correct grammar/spelling, etc. d. Answer the prompts with accuracy and detail e. Do your best, and continue to get better each week! 4) The writing assignment will be given to you at the beginning of each week. You can turn in the assignment at any time during the week, and you can always go back and complete a previous week writing prompt. Just make sure that you get 3 completed by the end of the grading period! 5) The weekly assignments will be listed below for you to use, and you may go back and do a previous week writing prompt. 6) You also have the option to complete a mini-biography on a Rock and Roll Band/Artist each week as well, instead of doing the writing prompt. The mini-biography report will count as your writing assignment for the week. Information for the mini- biography can be found below. 7) Please make sure that all of you work is your own. WEEK OF JANUARY 13TH: Explore the link on our course webpage about Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, and answer the following items below. Be sure to use the correct format for our weekly writing assignments when completing the work, as stated on our course webpage.
- Describe what new information you learned about Elvis Presley as you read about his life. - Explain at least 2 items that you found interesting about Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. WEEK OF JANUARY 20TH: Using information about our discussion on culture and lifestyle in the 1950's, you are either going to write a letter or journal entry as if you were living in the time period. You need put together a creative letter or journal entry that displays your knowledge of the decade. Include as many aspects of life in the 1950's as you can to show off your knowledge, and be as creative as you would like. Just keep in mind that you are someone that is living in that time period and describing all the great things that are taking place in the United States in the 1950's! Be creative, follow the guidelines, and ask questions if you need any assistance. WEEK OF JANUARY 27TH: This week we are beginning the discussion of many other musicians who influenced/impacted the early rock and roll movement in the 1950's. Explain what early 1950's artist was the most influential musician to Rock and Roll. Be sure to use facts to explain your opinion. Use information from our class discussions and worksheets, but you will also need to find additional information about your artist to support your opinion. Be sure to follow all the guidelines for the writing assignment. WEEK OF FEBRUARY 3RD: We will be using Newsela this week for our writing assignment. You can access the writing prompt through Newsela, which can be found in our Canvas course. You need to choose 1 of the 5 articles about life in the 1950s, and respond to the questions provided for you in the reading. You can respond and submit with the Newsela resource. Be sure that you are following all the guidelines for our writing assignments. Any questions, let me know! WEEK OF FEBRUARY 10TH: Watch the video clip titled "Brief History of the Civil Rights Movement" and respond to the questions below. Be sure to use proper paragraph form and the guidelines for the writing assignments. The video clip is located in Canvas under the Weekly Writing Assignment #5. Any issues, or questions, please see me! After watching the video, "Brief History of the Civil Rights Movement," identify and describe at least 4 events that took place that helped blacks attempt to achieve racial equality within the United States. WEEK OF FEBRUARY 17TH: Using the link below titled "Civil Rights Gallery," find additional information about a topic/event from the Civil Rights Movement. When you open the link, you will see a photo gallery. Choose a photo/event from the Civil Rights Movement, and when you open you will be able to get additional information about a topic of your choice. Summarize the event you choose and discuss the importance and/or impact this event had during the Civil Rights Movement. Be sure to show that you gained knowledge from the link, and follow the guidelines for the writing assignment. WEEK OF FEBRUARY 24TH: This week we are going to be listening to the song "The Times They Are A Changin" by Bob Dylan. We are going to discuss how the lyrics of this song relate to the Civil Rights Movement and the history we have been discussing. Using knowledge and information we discussed in class, identify and explain 3 parts of this song that relate to the history and information we discussed on the Civil Rights Movement. All this information will be discussed in class, so pay close attention and jot down some info to help you complete this week's assignment. Be sure that you still follow all guidelines for the writing assignment when completing. WEEK OF MARCH 2ND: Using the link below from the Motown Official Webpage, explore the timeline of how Motown Records began. Choose at least 4 events that helped establish Motown as an important part of music and culture in the early 1960's. Be sure that you still are using the proper formatting for writing, and following all the guidelines. |
